5 Tips For Listening To Audiobooks
Start with something simple
It’s a skill. I have said it before, and I will repeat it again. Since I could remember it better, I read a lot of middle-grade fiction and chick-lit when I first listened to audiobooks.
I also listened to books that I had meant to reread for years. Do not try to read The Brothers Karamazov for 37 hours. If you don’t, there are high chances that you won’t listen for more than thirty minutes and never listen to another audiobook. That would be terrible.
Also, choose something small
Dave Ramsey said that you should pay off your lowest debt first to give yourself a boost and help you get ready to tackle a more significant debt. The same applies to audiobooks.
The Nightingale was a great song that I listened to a while back. However, it was 17 hours long, which made me feel a little intimidated.
The Crossover popped up in my audiobook search, and I remembered I had meant to read it since it won the Newbery. It took me 2 hours and 16 minutes to read, but I could finish it in about a day and a quarter, which felt great.
It is nice to have a few wins before you start to plow through a 25-hour audiobook. On the other hand, if you can find a story and narrator you like, it’s great to know that your listening needs will be covered for a few weeks. My Texas library was closed for renovations one year, so I checked out Homecoming.
It is the narrator that matters
I have listened to many books I thought I wouldn’t like if I had read them on paper. Other books I read and then finished, I thought, “Should’ve read this book instead.”
There are many outstanding narrators, which makes a book even more enjoyable. Katherine Kellgren is my favorite narrator, and I was shocked to hear of her passing a few years back. You don’t have to love a narrator. Choose something better.
You can speed it up
Audiobooks are slow, which is why I have trouble with them. Depending on the narration, I prefer to listen at 1.5 to double speed. This makes it more conversational than a “put you to sleep” pace.
Some platforms, such as Audible, can go up to triple speed. When Bart was traveling between Phoenix and Las Vegas during his internship in 2014, my parents bought him an Audible gift subscription.
He listened at triple speed every drive, meaning he could listen to about 30 hours of audio each weekend. This was not counting the 80-minute commute during the week.
Although I had never heard him say that he could listen at that speed, he assured me it wasn’t that much of a problem. Let me know if you want to try 3x speed.
Listen when you are doing something completely mindless
Listening to audiobooks alone can make you feel anxious. Listen while you are driving, washing dishes, folding laundry or going for a run. It is incredible how willing I am to go through tedious chores when there is something to listen to.
